Update:
It has come to our attention that the Association for Asian Studies has quietly discontinued the sponsorship of panels by affiliated organizations. We would, however, like to see as much Manchu Studies content as possible on the conference program, and, to that end, will do our best to help potential panel organizers find participants and to offer help with abstracts. If you are preparing a Manchu Studies-related panel and would benefit from our assistance, please write to Jaymin (e-mail in the original announcement below) and let him know how the Manchu Studies Group can help.
Dear Members and Friends,
Now that the AAS has announced the Call-for-Proposals for its 2021 Annual Meeting in Seattle, we invite you to submit a panel proposal to be considered for Manchu Studies Group (MSG) sponsorship. Panels should have a theme concerning some aspect of Manchu studies, broadly construed, with a substantial engagement with Manchu-language materials in at least two papers. We welcome in particular interdisciplinary panels that bring together scholars in History, Literary Studies, Philology, and Ethnology, and especially encourage international collaborations between scholars based in different countries. Special preference will be given to panels with a diverse composition in gender, race, and ethnicity.
Given the uncertainty of international travel next year, we are committed to hosting a panel in whatever format best protects the health and safety of participants. That is to say, international scholars should feel encouraged to apply even if personal travel to the US might not be feasible. We would also gladly help spread the word if you have an idea but need additional panelists.
To submit a panel proposal, please send an email that includes 1) title and abstract for the panel; 2) names and affiliations of all presenters and the titles of the papers that they plan to deliver, preferably with a 1-2 sentence summary if not the full abstract; 3) contact information for the panel organizer, to Dr. Jaymin Kim at [email protected] by July 31, 2020.
Please also check out the latest updates on our Website http://manchustudiesgroup.org/, and consider following us on Facebook or Twitter. We look forward to hosting our annual meeting in Seattle and to sponsoring excellent research by our members.
Sincerely yours,
He Bian, Jaymin Kim, and David Porter
