Dear friends / gucuse:
ice aniya amba urgun sebjen okini!
New year’s greetings from the Manchu Studies Group!
As we emerge from the crucible that is 2021, we welcome the new year of 2022 knowing that it will continue to require tremendous amount of patience, grit, and generosity on each and every one of us. Looking back at the past year, we are proud of what we have accomplished in the spirit of maintaining and expanding the community of Manchu studies: a virtual gathering over the AAS that attracted more than 40 participants (minutes here); robust additions to the blog, with important updates to the Website design; a summer Advanced Manchu Workshop with 14 participants joining in from Europe, UK, the US, and Asia (see full list of participants, projects, and their feedback to the workshop here). Although the relentless cycle of academic life forced a hiatus to our outreach effort during the Fall semester, we look forward to planning ahead for what we can help you achieve in the new year.
So, to get things started, we write to you with the following reminders / requests / invitations:
– Our (unofficially sponsored) roundtable, “Manchu Pedagogy and Cross-Cultural Exchange in the 21st Century: A Roundtable to Honor Dr. Gertraude Roth-Li,” has been accepted to AAS 2022 as a virtual session! We will send around the particular date and time of the session (with Zoom link) as we receive more information. Please stay tuned and join us to hear Mark Elliott, Loretta Kim, Chia Ning, Kicengge, Lin Shih-hsuan, and David Porter reflect on their respective experiences teaching Manchu! We thank Dr. Li for allowing us to put together this roundtable and hope that she can join us from her home in Colorado.
– Also, note that if you are presenting or participating on an accepted panel, the deadline for pre-registering for AAS 2022 (Honolulu / online) is approaching on January 12. Register here.
– Please continue to share news of interest, research questions, and Manjuristic chatter with each other on our Facebook and Twitter accounts. No one answers a Manjuristic question with more eagerness and thoroughness than other fellow Manjurists!
– Looking ahead to Summer 2022, please send us a note at any time to [email protected] you plan to a) teach a Manchu class at any level and format; or b) organize a reading / writing group to read documents or share ongoing work. We are glad to help with publicizing the event and finding like-minded participants. We will post more about summer programming in April / May, and would appreciate your help spreading the words.
With that, we throw an actual or figurative snowball into the air and wish you excellent health and plenty of inspiration in the new year. May we see each other soon!
He, Jaymin, and David
